Sally Steel, Executive Director of Bolton’s Council on Aging, was our speaker.


 

Sally started outreach to Bolton seniors in 2011.  With 5 volunteers, they have been successful over the course of the last 12-18 months in making contact with all 1,000 residents of Bolton age 60 and over. Her group has worked to bring resources to those in need who were not previously being connected to available resources.  She shared several examples of families and individuals who have been helped.  She believes that the town needs to increase the hours that it devotes to outreach and her hours will increase effective this July. We then talked about ways in which our club can provide support to address some of the needs of all seniors across our communities. Karin and Jim Stone will send her additional information.

 

Speaker on May 9 at Nancy’s Airfield Café at 5:45 p.m.: Kate Barrett discusses managing a statewide nonprofit coalition of municipalities working on water resources issues.

Club Announcements:
  • District 7910 Conference will take place over the May 16-19 weekend and will be held at the Holiday Inn Boxborough.  The conference is free with the exception of the meals.  Our club wins points for members attending the conference so please attend!  Our club is participating in three ways:

    •    1    Hospitality Suite: Rotarians make the rounds Friday and Saturday nights (after the meal and evening program have concluded) and visit with Rotarians from other clubs.  This year there is a detective theme.  We are co-hosting a suite with East Fitchburg and have chosen Charlie Chan as our detective.  We are supplying the Chinese American food (mainly deserts) to go with this theme in our hospitality suite.  Please help by bringing food to the suite on Saturday when we are the hosts of the hospitality suite.  Contact Karin to help with the food.

       2    House of Friendship: Clubs will have displays of some of their events.  Our displays will be about our We are One project and Wings & Wheels events.

       3    Silent Auction: RichardS has donated a pair of 18K gold earrings to be auctioned off on Saturday night.

  • Stow’s Springfest will be on Saturday May 18 at the Stow Community Park which is located off of Old Bolton Road.  Dana, Rich, Barbara, and Bob will staff a Rotary table and volunteer at the event.
  • We Are One project – Natascha and Mary are developing ideas for promoting our We Are One mobile dental clinic project at the May 25 concert at Slater’s restaurant in Bolton.
  • Wings & Wheels – Laura is the chair of the planning committee for this event.  The first Cruise-In/Fly-In will take place on Thursday, June 6 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will continue every Thursday (except for July 4) through August 29. We are hosting the following dates: June 13, July 11, August 1, and August 22.  Our club will receive 1/3 of all proceeds from these events.
  • Nanci is working on a fundraising event with the Rotary Club of Hudson called, “Hudson Block Party and Brew Fest.”  The event will take place on August 17 from 3 to 7PM.  Retail stores will be open and food and beer will be sold by local restaurants.  Volunteers on the day of the event are needed.  Contact Nanci to sign up!Women in Rotary event – 2014 marks the 25th year that women have been eligible to join Rotary Clubs.  Karin is a member of the District 7910 committee working on this event.  Contact Karin for more information.

 

Happy/Sad Fines: 

Happy Fines

  • Laura was happy that she and Chris attended the Webster/Dudley Rotary meeting last week about haunted houses.
  • Jim was happy that he attended his first ever Rotary District Assembly last night.
  • RichG was also happy about attending his first ever Rotary District Assembly.
  • Chuck was happy that it has stopped snowing.
  • Nanci was happy that Mary Ann from Reflections attended as her gust.  She was also happy that she and Prez Karin attended the Groton/Pepperell’s meeting last week in support of Richard’s presentation regarding our We Are One project.
  • Mary Ann was happy that she was finally able to attend a meeting.
  • Matt was happy that he attended the Worcester’s Rotary Club’s meeting last week and enjoyed a wonderful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.  He was also happy that he is now a softball coach.
  • Allison was happy to have her guest, Ashley (soon to be her replacement) attending the meeting and being such a quick study.  She was also sad that she again has sick kids.
  • Ron was happy that he just spent 2 weeks in Florida, one on vacation with his family and the second week visiing with Concord Rotarian, Ed Fitzgerald.  He was also happy that his company, Network Allies, just became ISO 9001 certified.
  • Chris was happy for a fun night of belly dancing this past Saturday with Laura and with Richard and his girlfriend and the Garcia’s.
  • Karin was happy that she enjoyed Joey’s Voices with Dana and the Billerica Rotary Club last Saturday night.

Sad Fines

  • Bob was sad that he received a text from his daughter (who is on vacation in Hawaii) at 2 a.m.
  • Karin was sad that she has missed several days of Rotary events due to the “collie wabbles”.

 

Non Club Announcements:

  • This weekend, boutique for DVSN! Come Sat or Sunday – special items not normally included for Mom’s Day – potted plants, chocolate truffles, locally crafted jewelry and soaps 26 Anselm Way in Sudbury; this is the perfect gift shop for getting anything you might need for Mother’s Day for little money while supporting DVSN’s lawyer for a day program.
  • Marianne from Reflections is coming as a guest and wants to talk about road race for the White family who were terribly injured at the Marathon. Her daughter has been spearheading this effort.  See our website for more information.
  • The Rotary Club of Littleton is camping out in Littleton Common beginning Sunday May 5th – Saturday May 11th.  Stop by for a visit and support their campaign for ShelterBox.
  • Cyndi told us that the Rotary Club of Providence is hosting its 2nd Annual Providence Rotary Jazz Fest with the headliner, Steve Tyrell, a Grammy Award winner and Billboard Top Ten singer.  This event will take place at the Rhode Island Center for the Performing Arts in Cranston on Sunday, May 19 at 7 p.m.  Tickets can be purchased at the Rotary Club of Providence’s website.
